Samsung Shelves Galaxy Z TriFold: End of the Trifold Era?
Samsung Electronics
has discontinued its pioneering Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone in South Korea,
just three months after its December 2025 launch. The move, reported by Dong-A
Ilbo, halts domestic sales immediately while production ceases and
remaining stock clears. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the trifold
foldable category.
High Ambition Meets Harsh Economics
Positioned as a
premium technology showcase rather than a mass-market product, the Z TriFold
featured an innovative 165mm exterior screen that unfolded into a expansive
253mm tablet-sized display. Priced at ₩3.59 million (approximately R48,000
before taxes and duties), initial batches of around 3,000 units sold out within
minutes at retail. Secondary market prices soared to ₩10 million (R113,000),
driven by scarcity.
However, surging costs
for key components like DRAM, NAND flash, and Snapdragon processors eroded
profitability. Samsung effectively sold the device near cost, rendering
sustained production unviable despite strong collector demand.
Shifting Foldable
Landscape
Huawei now dominates
the trifold space with its Mate XT Ultimate Design, launched in late 2024. The
Chinese leader maintains availability in its home market and hints at a
second-generation model, even amid supply challenges.
Other manufacturers
proceed cautiously:
- Xiaomi's "Zhuque" trifold
appears in certification filings, targeting a potential Q3 2026 debut.
- Oppo holds functional prototypes but
adopts a "wait-and-see" stance on consumer appetite.
- Apple enters foldables with a clamshell
iPhone Flip and larger iPad/MacBook hybrid, avoiding trifolds for now. Its
anticipated polish could redefine standards and intensify price
competition.
Relevance for South
African Buyers
For tech enthusiasts
in Johannesburg and beyond, the Z TriFold's fate underscores foldables' growing
pains. Local pricing, inflated by import duties and VAT, would exceed R60,000,
favoring more practical bifold options from HONOR and Oppo. Samsung's retreat
signals a likely refocus on proven Z Fold models, while Huawei leads innovation
and Apple's arrival promises market maturation.
The trifold proves
advanced screen tech is ready; the business model is not. This retreat
highlights innovation's risks versus rewards in premium mobile hardware.
